On a dark urban alley, a young boy and his girlfriend ran. Their breath pounded in their chests as they ran, their grimy tennis shoes splashing in puddles. The rain had drenched their dirty, half-torn shirts and jeans, and it drained the spirit from them. They crashed into a chain-link fence and fell, exhausted. The girl cried, and the boy reached over and held her, staring behind them in fear.

A shadow fell over them both. The man was big, at least seven feet tall, dressed all in black leather and holding a giant nickel-plated pistol. Grinning, he revealed a gold tooth and aimed the gun down at them.

From above the fence, a flash of bright color swooped in and landed in front of the couple. Two bullets erupted from the pistol, but the bullets flattened against the chest of the new arrival...the Los Angeles superheroine known as Ultra-Girl. She was young, and beautiful, with short blond hair. Her costume, familiar to a lot of the teens in town, was an orange jumpsuit with green highlights, including a pair of green bracelets, combat boots and her belt, with it's "U" shaped belt-buckle. Slung over her shoulder was a bright orange duffel bag with the stylized logo of "Ultra Gear," her clothing line, emblazoned in green.

She smiled, and her blue eyes twinkled, as the gun-toting villain lowered his pistol in surprise. She reached into her bag and produced orange shirts that matched her own, with the Ultra-Gear logo on them. The couple reached up and took them, pulling them on, and instantly they were transformed. They stood up taller, and rushed at their attacker, who ran off in fear.

Behind them, Ultra-Girl smiled. "If you look good, you feel good. And there's nothing that can stop you," she said.

The ground underneath her erupted, sending chunks of concrete everywhere

From just off the set of the alley, the director yelled, "Cut! Cut! What's going on, Suzy?"

"I don't know, Rod!" she yelled back, and then let out a surprised yelp as a gigantic rocky fist closed around her ankle. She looked down to see that the concrete was reshaping itself, transforming into a humanoid shape, and as it rose from the ground, the hand moved up with it, trying to pull Ultra-Girl off her feet.

She reacted quickly, taking to the air with her flight abilities, a gift of her half-mutant/half-Kree lineage. The concrete fist stretched, holding on to her leg. "Look, Mr. Pavement, or whatever your name is, you just ruined a commercial shoot that was darn near perfect. So you better step back or you're going to be feeling some ultra-pain!"

The man of concrete didn't answer, but simply raised his other arm. The hand swirled open, and a burst of green gas flew out, engulfing Ultra-Girl. She coughed, took a half-hearted swing at the unknown attacker, and collapsed. He grabbed her, absorbed her into himself, and melted back down into the pavement again.

The crew and cast stared, open-mouthed, at the spot where Suzy had been standing only moments before.

Finally, Rod spoke. "Um...that's lunch, everyone."

Harry Sacker kept glancing nervously at the instruments on his jet. He had flown in combat missions before, both in the Gulf War and in mercenary actions. But mutants still made him nervous, and even though his boss had told him in no uncertain terms that he was to follow their instructions to the letter, he didn't like toting a handful of them around.

It would have made little difference to Harry if someone had explained that only two of the passengers, Angelica "Firestar" Jones and James Proudstar, were mutants. Three, perhaps, if you counted the Atlantean clone Namorita. It would not have assuaged his fears at all to know that one of the passengers, Genis, was the protector of the universe, with a proud legacy and cosmic power, nor to learn that Melina, another passenger, wielded the extradimensional energies of the Dragon's Breadth temple. Knowing that Nova, Alex Power and Speedball drew their powers from alien sources wouldn't have made him feel any better, either, and the fact that the former assassin Bengal was purely human would have been of little comfort.

And of course, he would not have been at all happy to learn that his boss, Mr. Dwayne Taylor, was in fact one of his passengers. The leader of this band of heroes, Dwayne was the man in black and crimson armor known as Night Thrasher.

Thrash was sitting in his seat, checking his armor and weapons, while his sometime-girlfriend Silhouette sat next to him. She was silent, hoping that Dwayne wasn't trying to manipulate the team back together again. There was bad blood here, and many of the team members had changed. Nita wasn't the same person physically or mentally, and while she seemed a bit more at peace with herself, she did seem uneasy here with this group. Especially Nova, whom she had once had a relationship with, and who harbored bad feelings of his own about the New Warriors. Alex Power was a wreck, having seen friends die and teams disband, and the last time he was with the Warriors, they had killed his friend, the smartship Friday. Firestar had witnessed the death of Justice, her true love, and being around the team only reminded her of that. And Speedball had been instrumental in the deaths that Power and Firestar had witnessed. While he was keeping up a brave front, Silhouette was sure Robbie Baldwin was dealing with some very heavy pain.

The newcomers were another matter. Bengal probably didn't even understand completely what was going on, he was just following Melina. The two of them chatted in Cambodian, and Silhouette wondered what was going on in the girl's head. She was born a daughter of the Dragon Temple, just like Sil. And if she were anything like Tai, the ruthless murderess who was Sil's grandmother and matriarch of the temple, she would need to be watched carefully. Genis, for his part, seemed utterly unconcerned with any goings-on, as if the Warriors were pretty much inconsequential to him. Unlike Proudstar, who seemed to be seeking a new place to fit in, and was obviously glad to be seeing Angelica again.

Silhouette was about to talk to Dwayne, see if she could feel out his intentions, when the plane rocked violently. Speedball, the only one not strapped in, went flying around the cabin, careening around the walls like a rubber ball until Proudstar put an arm up and grabbed him. The plane was obviously angling toward the ground now. Dwayne triggered the radio and voice synthesizer in his mask and contacted the cockpit.

"Mr. Sacker, what's going on?"

The only response was static. Dwayne unbuckled his seatbelt, giving a cybernetic command through his armor. Two metallic claws emerged from his boots, digging into the floor and keeping him upright even as the angle of the plane's descent grew steeper. Dwayne rushed forward, the climbing claws automatically releasing and grasping to keep him grounded, and he pulled open the cockpit door.

He immediately regretted it, as a rush of air began, attempting to equalize the pressure in the plane.

Dwayne slammed the door shut, but in the brief moment, he had seen why Sacker wasn't responding. The entire cockpit had been melted away, the only hints of its previous existence being a bit of molten slag around the edges of the remaining fuselage.

Turning on his loudspeaker, Dwayne yelled, "Silhouette, I need you to get us out of here! We're heading for the ground!"

Silhouette yelled back, "Dwayne, if we shadow-melt from here, we keep our momentum!"

"Splat," Speedball muttered darkly.

Firestar powered up her heat aura, burning away her seatbelt, and grabbed hold of Proudstar's arms. "Everyone who can fly, grab someone who can't!"

"You sure you can hold me, Angelica?" he said.

"I'll manage, Jimmy. Just stay very still, OK?"

Captain Marvel moved up alongside the two of them and grabbed Proudstar around the waist. "Don't be foolish, Firestar. I'll take Proudstar, you take Speedball."

Namorita and Nova both got up and shared a glance. They were different, so different from when they had last known each other, but in combat, they still could speak without words. Nova flew up to the front, grabbing Silhouette as he went, and floated next to Thrasher.

Namorita flew over to Melina and Bengal. The two of them were already getting up. In the seat behind them, Alex Power had also stood. He asked, "Can I...?"

"I've got them," Nita said, grabbing the two newcomers with her arms.

"We're ready, Thrash!" Nita yelled.

Thrasher opened the door, and the rush of air sucked the Warriors out. They quickly regained their balance and began streaking away from the plane and toward the jungle below. Thrasher was scanning the air with his infrared sensors, and pointed off in the distance.

"There!"

About thirty feet above them, the Warriors saw a woman bathed in an aura of flame. She was clearly oriental, with a sharp, short haircut, and was dressed in a loose pink and white costume. Some of the Warriors recognized her as Silk Fever, former member of the villainous Folding Circle. All of them recognized her as the woman responsible for killing Sacker and destroying their plane.

She spun in midair and began diving at the team, leaving a fiery trail behind her. She stretched out her arm to unleash a torrent of flame at the group. Melina chanted quickly, and a vortex of energy opened between Fever and the Warriors, absorbing the flame with a loud "fwoosh" and then disappearing.

"Awwwww yeah!" Speedball yelled, pointing up at Silk Fever. "Nobody messes with the Warriors, baby! Whooooaaaaa!"

The last came when Firestar dove for the ground, trying to get Speedball down before Silk Fever fired another shot. Captain Marvel and Powerhouse had followed a similar flight path, and Nova and Namorita split off from each other to give more targets while slowly moving toward the ground.

Silk Fever flew quickly toward Namorita and unleashed a wall of flame that engulfed the Atlantean. She cried out as the heat burned her, dehydrating her body, and she began falling. Melina and Bengal were also caught in the wash of flame, and they began plummeting toward the ground as well.

"This is a turkey shoot for her!" Dwayne yelled in frustration. "Nova, throw me up toward her!"

"Are you nuts, Dwayne? The fall will kill you, if she doesn't incinerate you!"

"She's going to kill us all unless I do something! Damn it, Rich, if you ever listen to me, do it now!"

Rich Rider stared into Night Thrasher's eye, visible beneath his visor. He saw the steel there that he had always seen...a near inhuman focus on doing what needed to be done. No matter the cost. He was reminded of why he'd signed on with the Warriors in the first place. And all he could think was how much he didn't want Dwayne to die.

"Just do it!"

Nova angrily threw Thrash up, and as he arced toward Silk Fever, Dwayne clicked a control button on his right gauntlet. He held it out as he passed Silk Fever and a fine spray of cayenne pepper and other irritants shout out, blinding the woman and causing her to cry out in anger and pain. Dwayne finished the arc and began falling downward.

Captain Marvel flew back up and caught Bengal as Proudstar twisted in his grasp and caught both Melina and Namorita.

"Can you hold all this weight, Cap?"

"Without any difficulty, Proudstar," Genis answered. "But it will cut down on our maneuverability."

"I wouldn't worry too much about that," Proudstar answered. "Look."

They looked up and saw Silk Fever flying in a random pattern, up and around, firing bursts of flame all around her. She didn't see where her flight pattern was going, however, and so she couldn't see that she had flown into the path of the crashing Taylor Foundation jet.

Firestar screamed, "Look out!" but it was too late.

Fever recognized what was happening seconds before the plane was upon her, and she let out a scream. There was a sickening crunch as the plane smashed into her, and she was engulfed in the wreckage as it began falling to the ground.

Night Thrasher watched the scene with a grim satisfaction. He hadn't wished her dead, but he wouldn't shed any tears either. He looked around for Nova, and was relieved when the human rocket flew over and caught him.

"Let's get down on the ground," Thrasher said. "She was definitely not alone."

In the jungles below, Silk Fever's teammates watched as she met her fate. The largest of them, a man standing about eight feet tall and wrapped in red cloth, save for his black pants and half-bare chest covered with a bloody red tattoo, muttered, "Ooh. That's gonna leave a mark."

The leader of the group, a dark-skinned man with long black hair tied up in a warrior knot, stared into the red circular sunglasses of that man and said, "Show some respect, Bloodstrike. Silk Fever was your teammate, and she would have been a big help fighting the Warriors."

The third member of the team, another dark-skinned man, albeit younger than the leader, dressed in blue and black leather and sporting a bald head and facial scar, snorted. "We don't need that woman to take on Taylor's pathetic friends, Diego."

"The Warriors outnumber us, Midnight's Fire," Diego responded. "And I would prefer that you call me The Left Hand. Or else, when this is over, I may let Smiling Tiger have you."

Diego yanked on a chain and from out of the bushes came a demonic-looking figure, about five feet tall, with long sharp claws. His body was sheathed in an orange and black armor suit, and his face had a red grin and eyes painted on it. He did not look human, and the way he moved over to Diego following the chain attached to his spiked collar made him look more like a psychotic pet.

"Your threats don't scare me, Left Hand. But I will do as you say for now."

Diego nodded his head and then began moving, trying to guess where the Warriors' flight path would take them. Not surprisingly, they were headed right for where the Temple had been. They would be quite surprised to find who was waiting there for them.

Nova landed first, setting Silhouette and Night Thrasher on the ground. They watched a fiery trail and a starry trail come down simultaneously a few feet away, and crashed through the trees to find Captain Marvel and Firestar setting down with their cargo. Powerhouse set down a few feet away from them and gave a half-hearted thumbs-up.

"Ohhh baby...that was intense!" Speedball yelled. He let out a loud whoop and threw his hands in the air.

"Quiet, Robbie," Thrasher ordered. "No need to give our position away anymore than it already is."

Firestar had rushed over to join Proudstar in looking at Nita, Melina and Bengal. She had lost too many friends already, and now she feared she had lost another.

"Jimmy...are they okay?"

"They're out cold, but I think they'll be fine."

"Damn!" Thrasher swore. "We needed Melina. I have a general idea where the temple was, but without her, I have no idea exactly where it is."

"I have a guess," Speedball said. He was pointing through the trees, and the others gathered around to look.

In the center of a large clearing was a large yellow machine, at least twenty feet high, which looked like an enormous tube. It was covered with flashing gauges and steam pipes, shooting off into ten-foot high pods that were surrounding it. The top of it was a glass dome, filled with incandescent gas, rapidly changing color in an almost hypnotic pattern.

Standing in front of the device, grinning from ear to ear, was a tall, thin man with green skin. His head was oddly shaped, as if his brain was trying to escape from his head, forming two large protrusions on the top. His eyes had a glint of madness, and the wild grin beneath his black mustache did nothing to dispel that notion. Most of them recognized him. He was the villain known as the Leader.

Thrash was the first to burst out of the trees, and the other Warriors quickly followed him.

"Leader! It's over! Stop whatever you're doing!"

He simply cocked his head, as if amused by the arrogance of these youths. Then he gestured, and a beam of bright sparkling energy shot from one of the smaller pods and impacted on Captain Marvel, sending him flying back into the jungle. He disappeared into the trees.

"Whatever I'm doing? Oh, you young heroes these days...don't even want to know the villain's master plan before you strike. Well, thankfully, at least one of us respects tradition. I've prepared someone to deal with the inevitable superhero interference."

From behind the machine, four figures stepped out. Dwayne recognized them immediately, he had formed a brief partnership with the Folding Circle. Bloodstrike, the massive former gangster; Smiling Tiger, incredibly fast and deadly; Midnight's Fire, Silhouette's brother and her equal in speed and fighting prowess; and their leader, the energy-manipulating Left Hand.

Night Thrasher immediately moved in, charging at Midnight's Fire. Fire smiled and charged with equal ferocity, and the two met in the center of the clearing, immediately launching into a flurry of punches, kicks, blocks and dodges. Fire had the speed advantage, but Thrasher was a better martial artist, and for a second, both sides were stunned into silence by the battle.

That didn't last, however, and The Left Hand broke the silence by yelling, "Bloodstrike! Smiling Tiger! Take them!"

Smiling Tiger leaped from the ground, about seven feet into the air, and arced down toward Silhouette. She responded by disappearing, re-appearing from the shadows of the trees.

"Come and get me," she growled. Smiling Tiger charged at her, happy to oblige.

Bloodstrike charged in and was met by Proudstar, who landed a solid blow to his chin. Bloodstrike flew back a few feet and landed on his back. He stood, rubbed his jaw, and admitted, "Not bad. Not good enough, but not bad."

Alex Power turned into his mist form as the Left Hand raised his fist and let spears of dark matter fly out toward the remaining Warriors. Firestar burned the one coming at her with microwaves, and Nova took his full in the chest, grunting in pain and then flying toward the Left Hand.

Speedball, meanwhile, bounced off the ground and straight toward the Leader. He was surprised when the Leader's arm shot up and caught him by the throat.

"Foolish boy. I have tapped the power of this well. I am invincible."

The Leader looked around as the Warriors and the Folding Circle clashed.

"Since your friends are busy, I'll tell you the plan. It's a supervillain tradition, after all...I have to boast to someone, even if it's the weakest, most foolish member of the group. With the power of this well and the device I've constructed, I'll be able to eliminate all technology. In a few moments, I'll send out a magical wave that will change the physical laws of the Earth. Magic will reign, technology will fail. Not my technology, naturally, which I've shielded and hidden in various locations around the globe."

Speedball didn't answer, he just concentrated, only half-listening to the Leader.

"Think of it, boy. I'll be the only technology provider left. People will have no choice but to accept me as their leader, or their entire way of life will be destroyed. It will be glorious."

The Leader noticed that Speedball wasn't paying much attention, and he let out a heavy sigh.

"Ah, well. I'm babbling. Let's just watch the battle as I choke the remaining life out of you, shall we? It amuses me."

"Yeah?" Speedball choked out. "Then you ought to get a real kick out of this."

Using the control over kinetic motion that he had discovered, he concentrated and watched as the Leader's hand let loose of his throat. The Leader looked surprised, but found himself unable to move as Robbie held him in place.

"And now for my next trick," he said, hauling back his arm. He focused all his kinetic energy into a punch and hammered the Leader, sending the madman careening through the machine and out the other side. Explosions wracked the machine as the energy coursed through it, running up the pipes and into the smaller pods. Steam and light escaped from various cracks.

The battles continued while all of this was going on. Midnight's Fire and Thrasher were both bloody and bruised, but neither was giving any indication of being hurt. Thrasher's helmet had been shattered, and Fire's shirt was torn nearly off. The two men continued to spar, each one landing more blows than they were blocking.

Proudstar and Bloodstrike were in a similar contest, albeit with less skill. Rather, the two large bruisers were pounding on each other with all their might, the only sound coming from them resounding thuds and the occasional grunt of pain or exertion.

The Left Hand was busy, firing energy from his hands to engage Nova and Firestar, who were flying around him, and trying to keep Alex Power from getting in close with solid black energy shapes.

Smiling Tiger had already gone down to Silhouette. She was amazed at the speed and strength that had returned to her since she had nearly died.* Tiger hadn't even been much of a challenge. Now she moved in to help Dwayne face her brother. (* In New Warriors Annual #5 – Milking-That-For-All-It's-Worth Randy)

The Left Hand cried out in pain as a microwave burst found its mark, and in that moment of distraction, Powerhouse and Nova both struck. Diego fell to the ground unconscious, his dreams of power shattered once again.

As the explosions continued in the device, Speedball bounced toward where the Leader had fallen. He didn't find him there, so he bounced back to the device and started yelling. "Guys! Time out, stop the fight, big nasty stuff happening!"

Midnight's Fire gritted his teeth. "You have grown better, Dwayne. Lost an eye, but none of your skill."

The only response was a punishing right cross that hit him square in the mouth.

"I have added new tricks myself," Fire said. He executed a triple backflip, reaching inside a pack at his side in mid-air. When he landed, his arm blurred and he released a handful of shuriken at near supersonic speed. Thrasher didn't have a chance of avoiding them.

Fortunately, he didn't have to. There was a blur of dark motion in front of him, and when it stopped, Silhouette was standing there, holding a handful of shuriken in her hands.

"Sister...? Your legs?"

Silhouette didn't answer, she just extended her leg fully and kicked Fire in the teeth, knocking him to the ground. He looked up at her, blood pouring from his mouth.

"You still...choose him over me?"

"I choose right over wrong, brother. You've never been able to tell the difference."

Proudstar finally landed a solid blow on Bloodstrike, and the large man was sent sprawling, right toward the self-destructing device on top of the well.

"Ohhhhhhhh, sheep dip," Speedball muttered, and then dove for all he was worth toward the rest of the Warriors.

The device shattered, and a burst of multicolored energy shot straight up into the sky, seeming not to end. A pillar of extradimensional fire lit the area, and Bloodstrike, who had been at ground zero, was nowhere to be seen. The Left Hand woke up as his body was dragged across the ground and toward the pillar, and he screamed as he was pulled inside.

The pull began getting stronger, and the Warriors could feel it as well. Proudstar dug his heels into the ground and caught Speedball as he went flying back toward it. Firestar, Nova and Powerhouse all flew against it with all their might. Thrash dug into the ground with his claws and held onto Silhouette, who watched in horror as her brother went flying past them and into the pillar.

Her horror increased when she saw the unconscious forms of Nita, Melina and Bengal flying toward the pillar. No one could do anything about it, no one was close enough.

Then Captain Marvel came flying out of the trees, his face filled with stars and his Nega-bands glowing. The energy began to subside somewhat, as streaks of it shot out and hit his bands. He grimaced in pain, and stopped in midair as more of the energy was diverted to the bands. He held his arms far apart and floated in midair, groaning slightly as the energy flow increased. The suction had stopped, and Nita and the others crashed to the ground just a few feet from the pillar.

The energy all began diverting, until Captain Marvel was bathed in the energy, yelling with the pain as it coursed through his body. He forced his arms together, aiming them down at the source of the well, and shut his eyes, yelling even louder. A burst of his energy fired from the bands and hit the center of the well, and the flow of energy suddenly stopped.

Captain Marvel collapsed to the ground, panting from the exertion. The others rushed over to him. He looked up and smiled slightly.

"So...did I pass the Warriors audition?"

With that, he passed out.

He awoke to the sound of helicopter rotors, and looked around. He realized that he was laying on a cot in the middle of a helicopter, right behind the cockpit. There was a murmur of conversation behind him, and in front of him was the pilot, a stocky black woman wearing a combat helmet. She was looking at him.

"It's about #^%!!@ time you woke up," she said.

"Sprocket? Is he awake?"

Night Thrasher? Nova? Proudstar? One of those had spoken.

Shaking his head, Genis tried to clear the remaining cobwebs. The Warriors were gathered around him, looking down anxiously.

"You alright?" Proudstar asked.

"I feel...fine," Genis lied, sitting up. He moaned in pain and laid back down.

"What the hell did you do?" Nova asked.

"Cosmic awareness...I knew that the well was...exploding, sending energy everywhere. Not sure what purpose, but...would have been dangerous...I contained it with the Nega-bands, and used my own cosmic energy to reverse the flow."

"How did you know that would work?" Firestar asked.

Genis smiled. "I didn't. Seemed like our best chance."

Most of the Warriors smiled back, aside from Thrasher. Genis was starting to wonder if he ever smiled. As the Warriors started to walk back to their seats, Genis put out a hand and grabbed Thrasher's arm.

"So...was this the first or last mission for this team?"

Thrasher just stared at him for a second. Looked at the hand on his arm, looked back at the team, looked down into Genis' face.

"The first. I don't think all of them will stay, but some of them will. I was hoping you'd stick around too."

"It would be an honor. The New Warriors...the world needs us."

Dwayne smiled. "Captain, you took the words right out of my mouth."

New Opinions

Frankie has bowed out to focus on his other series, so it's just me from now on. I had too much energy, too many ideas, to hand the title off as I had originally planned, and Frankie generously agreed to let me fly solo. So, that announcement made, on with the letters!

From Matthew Wang -
Wow! I finally was able to read this brand new issue of New Warriors and I have to say that I loved it. It just oozed Fabien's New Warriors run with its internal conflicts and dead on characterization of the characters. Cambodia and the Temple of the Dragon's Breath, now that's the New Warriors I remember!

Although I don't like the path that some of the New Warriors have taken, I still appreciate how you guys respected MV1 continuity (esp. for me who is a MV1 novice) with their characterizations and a brief update on what they are doing.

So the Wraith is alive in MV1 and he works for someone interested in Turbo's armor and Darkhawk's amulet? Very interesting.

The fight with the Hulk was pretty good too. I liked the fact that jaded New Yakwers (like me) would stand around and gawk at the fight.

Genis too! Now he would be a potentially great member of the New Warriors if only he wasn't so cosmically based.

My only complaint for this issue is that Robbie did not feel like his usual self, but that is probably due to the recent events of his life.

As usual, looking forward to the next issue.

I could wish for a few more of the Warriors myself, Matthew (I really would have liked to have used Justice, my favorite New Warrior) but I'm glad you understand the continuity constraints we're under. I think it's part of what makes working in a shared universe exciting, having to modify plans, and in many cases, my backup plans have been more exciting than my originals would have been. I think that's definitely going to be the case with the Warriors. And as you note, some of the changes are noticeable, such as Robbie Baldwin, who is trying to be the old Robbie, but has seen a bit too much to easily fall into his somewhat goofy pattern.

The Wraith...er, I should have been clearer. This is just a new guy using the codename, not Brian DeWolff, who as far as I know, is still dead. But the organization he works for will be revealed shortly, and it's someone the Warriors have had contact with before.

Next Issue:

What do we do with 11 Warriors? Who stays, who goes, and what do they do with their time? Plus, where will the Warriors operate from? It's not where you think! The "Old Order Changeth" next issue as we set the stage for the future of the New Warriors.
