Story: Mason Pohl was a geneticist who worked at Sondergaard Laboratories in Helios City. He was working on an experimental project that was attempting to use epigenetics to help modify organisms to make them better at enduring space travel. His research was showing promising results, both on paper and with the experimental test animals.

One day while Pohl was preparing to test the latest epigenetic gas treatment on a series of rats, the lab was rocked with an explosion as goons from the terrorist cell known as the Terror Web stormed the building. The Terror Web was after Pohl's research data that they hoped to seize and weaponize.

Pohl was wounded by a stray blast from the goon's weapons. The blast ripped open his protective suit and exposed him to the chemical mist that he was using in the experiment. The chemical mist had an unexpected reaction with Pohl's body and he passed out.

When Pohl regained consciousness, the Terror Web attack had been defeated and he was in a special isolation ward at Helios General Hospital under the watchful eye of the Federal Bureau of Superhumans (FBS). The chemical mist had transformed Pohl's body into the dense, rock-hard material that it is today. His body was so dense that he found himself in a special 'bed' (more like a concrete slab) that could accommodate his new weight.

Pohl was question by the FBS agents about the Terror Web attack at Sondergaard Laboratories. It was initially thought that Mason Pohl had died during the attack in a lab fire and the 'monstrous' being that they found was an agent of the Terror Web. Pohl was able to prove that he was who he said he was and he was transformed into the stone-like being.

The news of Pohl's survival and his transformation was leaked to the press and the world knew Mason Pohl had become a freak. He tried to live a normal life but his newly found abilities made things difficult. He was at a loss as what to do next. Then fate intervened.

When the aliens known as the Collectors tried to steal whole sections of Helios City, Carbon joined with like minded heroes and saved the city. They became known as the Sensational Seven.
