Origin and Background: (American) Dr. Kenneth Stanlake toiled, in relative obscurity, at the Samson Technologies Inc thinktank. His projects never seemed to interest his superiors and as such, he was pretty much left alone. The rest of the research personel thought Stanlake was a bit eccentric, especially with his obsession with Norse mythology.
Then one day terrorists attacked Samson Technologies Inc. The thinktank's central mainframe was hacked and purged for vital information. Chaos reign as many were killed and many more were taken prisoner (including Stanlake). The Order of the Shadow Dawn had won a valuable prize in their daring assault of Samson Technologies Inc.
After some time, Stanlake awakes to find himself tied to a strange stone slab and stripped down to his waist. He struggled as strange robed initiates painted arcane symbols on his body with red paint (he atleast hoped it was paint). The initiates began to chant as they continued to paint arcane runes around the stone altar.
A blinding pain ripped through Stanlake's mind as the runes began to burn with mystical fire. The burning sensation intensified with each increasingly louder chant. Stanlake screamed as his body exploded from the pain.
Or that was what Stanlake thought as the magical energies surged through his body. Unknown to him, he was selected by Hellfire to be the subject of an elemental summoning spell. Hellfire had hoped to use human hosts to summon the greater spirits from the Elemental planes. That way each elemental would be bonded to Hellfire's will.
Stanlake was lucky. In his struggles, he managed to smear a few of the mystical runes that were painted around him. This was able to divert some of the spell's mystical energy away from Stanlake. He gained some of the powers of the earth, but escaped the mind control aspect of the transformation spell.
He quickly took advantage of his situation and escaped. He found himself in their research laboratory after some skulking through their hidden HQ. He was able to find the stolen information and took the necessary actions to liberated it from their possession.
Then an idea formed in his head. He scavanged spare parts to craft a crude version of what would become his Modi's Hammer. With his new found strength and weapon, he tore his way through the rank and file. Through sheer guile and tenacity, Stanlake battled his way to freedom. He escaped into the night away from Hellfire's clutches.
Stanlake was quickly able to create a lab to finish what he had previously started. He tinkered with his original design and created the improved Modi's Hammer. Stanlake knew he had a crusade to win and he armed himself accordingly. With his love for Norse Mythology, Stanlake named his new persona after the god of Thunder, Tor. As Tor, he was a founding member of the Justice Crusaders.
