Cliffhanger Case Files Submission Guidelines

Welcome to the CLIFFHANGER CASE FILES pulp webzine. We're dedicated to original fiction based on the Pulp genre. If you're interested in submitting stories for Cliffhanger, then here's the answers for a few questions that you might be wondering about.

What are the type of stories I'm looking for?

I'm looking for well plotted, well written stories that capture the pulp atmosphere/genre. What I am not interested in is ideas. Ideas are a dime a dozen (sorry, but it is true). If you have an idea for a story, that's great. But what I'm interested in seeing is the story and not the idea. Write the story and then send it to me. Naturally, there are exceptions to this rule but a writer needs to earn a reputation to qualify for such an exception. Either way, I reserve the final say as to what I will or will not appear on the site (consider it one of the perks for paying the bills so the site can exist).

What about the Shadow, Tarzan, or some other copyrighted and/or trademarked character?

Sorry, I'm not interested. Cliffhanger policy towards copyright is simple - the only copyright material that I'll consider publishing must belong to the author submitting the story. As a result of this policy, all writers own the copyrights to their own stories. I do not claim any type of ownership over the work. I do claim copyright on the HTML presentation of the story, but not the actual story itself. Course this still allows authors to create homage characters based on their favourite pulp characters. Please note that while some stories may be in the Public Domain, the characters within those stories may still be covered by active Trademarks.

Do you guys pay for stories?

Sorry, but we're a non-profit webzine that is interested in giving writers a chance to show off their work. In other words, that's a no, we don't pay people for the stories.

Okay I sent you a story. What now?

If you do send in a story, don't be surprised if it takes a little bit of time before I (or my righthand man, Derrick) can get back to you. Reviewing a story takes time. Don't be surprised if we reply to your submission with suggestions - we're not doing it to be mean. We're trying to help by making your story better. *Everyone* benefits from having constructive feedback. A proof-reader will often catch things that the original author might miss.

I've known people who get angry/feel resentment when you offer feedback. If you're just interested in getting your ego stroked then this isn't the right place for you. I prefer quality over quantity anyday and an author who can do both is worth his or her weight in gold.

That's all for now. Hope to hear from you soon.
