DC LEGENDS: Who Is David Brashear?
David Brashear: Why, I'm me of course. Unless you're asking in a Zen sort of way...
DCL: What's your background?
DB: Nothing out of the ordinary. Single, graduate, and doing nothing with my degree. Sigh...
DCL: Where do you live?
DB: I live in central Kentucky.
DCL: When did you start writing and how long have you been writing?
DB: I've been writing for about as long as I can remember. I think I was the only person in my high school English classes who enjoyed creative writing assignments.
DCL: What are your influences?
DB: Definitely Marv Wolfman - his New Teen Titans is one of the first comics I remember reading. I've also been influenced by Keith Giffen's Justice League and (later for me) Legion work - he showed me how you can mix humor and respect for continuity. And of course I have to add James Robinson. I'd love to be able to do a huge story like Starman that was that planned out and that good.
DCL: Why SUPERBOY? What attracted you to the character?
DB: I've always been a fan of Superboy - as a matter of fact, he was my favorite out of the four back when DC started the Reign of the Superman storyline. He's unique (to me) in that he's got Superman's powers that are kind of tweaked, but he's also just an ordinary guy. He's not a genius like Batman, and it's entirely possible he could spot a hot blonde in a short dress and forget all about the villain he was chasing.
I'd actually written Superboy for another website as well and got the idea for the TV show. The problem was 1) I'd already given the book up to someone else and 2) Continuity over there is extremely tight and moving Superboy cross-country might interfere with other books he was in as well (namely Teen Titans). I'd looked around a bit at DC Legends and thought that this might be the perfect place to do this series. I emailed Tim and I think you can guess the rest.
DCL: What excites you the most about writing SUPERBOY?
DB: It's fun. In my mind, I just take a normal kid, give him these powers, and let him go. The rest just usually writes itself.
DCL: What future plans do you have for SUPERBOY?
DB: I'm actually sketching out what may happen over the next 12 issues. I'd really like to get more into the supporting cast. I feel like I've developed Ryan pretty well, and of course Roy Harper and Rex and Roxy Leech are published characters, but there's still a lot more ground to cover with the others. I've got an idea forming for Cory Hawke, but I still don't have a good handle on who Maria Cruz (Enigma) is yet. Also, as far as Superboy himself, I've just introduced his heat vision powers. He'll need to learn to handle those as well.
DCL: What are your writing habits? Do you have specific times you set aside for writing?
DB: Not really. I try to do some writing everyday (emphasis on try) but I really don't have a set time.
DCL: Do you think fan fiction is helping your growth as a writer?
DB: I think so. I think that writing is like anything else you do - the more you practice, the better you get at it. I've definitely had hits and misses with things I've done (or tried to do), but I hope that the misses are getting fewer and farther between as I keep writing.
DCL: What do you like to read?
DB: Right now I've been reading a lot of military fiction - Tom Clancy and things like that. My comic reading list is pretty, well, hard to define. It can even change from day to day.
DCL: What's a typical Day In The Life Of David Brashear like?
DB: Pretty boring, actually. Go to work, maybe go to the gym, watch some TV or mess around on the computer, and then bed. Sorry. Never said I was exciting.
DCL: Go ahead and plug anything you'd like.
DB: I've got to plug my weekly column Great-ing Gimmicks of the Past over at Inside Pulse (insidepulse.com) - it comes out Wednesday afternoons and covers wrestling stories of the past, both good and bad. And I take requests, too! Just like your local radio station (except I'm much less perky in the mornings).
DCL: What other writing projects of yours should we be on the lookout for?
DB: Most of my stuff is at DC Anthology (dca.bhyphen.com), which is currently being reloaded. Over there I've written Superboy, Titans West, Arsenal, and a Flamebird mini series. Right now I've got Justice League International and Teen Titans: Millennium (think Ultimate Teen Titans) on my plate, as well as minis for Kid Eternity and I... Vampire that will lead into another project I'm developing. Over at Marvel Anthology (which is down right now), I'm doing a Gambit ongoing.
DCL: Anything else you'd like us to know about you?
DB: Not much, really. If you've got any questions, go ahead and shoot me an email.
