Origin and Background: (American) In his early days, during the Roaring Twenties, Randolph Snow searched for lost gold in the Andes, matched his wits against Chinese pirates, discovered diamonds in South Africa, and had many more undisclosed adventures. His successful enterprises made him a very wealthy man.
His trips around the world eventually allowed him to meet and fall in love with the stunning, Petra Kirkham. A few adventures later, they were married and treking across the globe together. After a few years little Rebecca was born. She was the sparkle in Randolph's eye. He and his wife decided to give up on the globe trotting to raise their daughter.
Unfortunately this happiness ended while the Snow family was on a wilderness retreat in Africa in 1937. Their encampment was attacked by a rogue bull elephant. The local porters tried to escape to safety but the elephant quickly trampled those that fell under its path. Human screams mingled with animal cries as the sounds echoed in the night. Randolph Snow was able to get Petra and little Becky away from the rampaging elephant, but not before it decimated the rest of his camp. He told his family to stay put while he tracked the elephant down before it could kill anyone else.
While Randolph tracked the elephant, Petra helped organize the remaining survivors at the camp. In their disorganized state, they didn't notice the strange tribesmen who watched them from the bush. As Petra tended to the wounded, the camp was attacked by these strange tribesmen. They slaughtered all the surviving porters, and they were going to kill Petra and her daughter, but an voice called out to them to stop. To Petra's surprise, the tribesmen obeyed.
A man dressed in khakis, and wearing a single monocle in his right eye, stepped out from the darkness of the bush and introduced himself as Baron von Stahlhammer. It was his hunting party that had caused the bull elephant to go mad when their poison didn't kill it, as they intended. He offered the attractive Petra a chance to save her and her daughter's lives if she would accompany him on his travels. Petra asked what would happen if she refused and the Baron simply smiled and waved his savage chieftan over to join them. He informed her that she would either acoompany him, or she would be given to the chieftan as a present. Petra didn't see any other alternative - she reluctantly accepted the Baron's offer (with the hope that Randolph would be able to rescue them when he returned).
A few hours later, Randolph arrived at the devestated encampment to find that his wife and daughter were missing, and all of their porters were dead. He knew that someone had finished what the elephant started, but who? He followed the many tracks that led from the camp into the surrounding wilderness. He followed them for days until he came across a strange site. Buried in the side of a cliff was an evil looking, skull-like fortress. Randolph could hear strange chants echoing from inside.
That night, he crept silently into the skull fortress to try to find his missing family. His search led him to a blood stained altar, located in the centre of the cavern-like fortress. Many savages danced around a large fire as they chanted in some forgotten language. The Baron stepped out from the darkness. He was dressed in black robes with a skull mask hiding his features, but his voice gave away his European ancestry. He chanted as he raised a black opal dagger into the air. He called on Nyarlathotep to accept his sacrifices.
To Randolph's horror, he realized that his Petra and Rebecca were tied to that vile altar. They didn't struggle against their bonds, so Randolph could only guess that they were drugged or hypnotized. He didn't wait for the cultists to finish their ritual. He lept into the middle of the fray and quickly fought his way to the altar. He struggled with the Baron who still held the ritual knife high in the air. Randolph used his superior strength to make the Baron drop his weapon. He then kicked it away from the altar. He was about to knock the Baron unconscious with one final blow, when he felt the sting of several darts pierce his flesh... and then the horrifying scenery around him swirled and faded out.
Randolph woke up in a dank dungeon chained to the wall. He screamed for his family, but no one answered his calls. He tried to pull himself free but the chains wouldn't budge. Then a German voice penetrated the cell. He told Randolph that he almost interrupted an important ceremony, but luckily that they were able to finish it once he was removed. Randolph continued to struggle with his chains as he screamed Petra's name over and over again.
The Baron continued with his little speech. He thanked Randolph for bringing such exquisite sacrifices so close to his fortress. The rogue elephant was but an accident but it did prove to be fortuitous for him and his followers - it led them to Randolph's encampment. The Baron proceeded to inform Randolph that at sunset, he would be the next sacrifice to their Dark God. The Baron's laughter echoed as it faded away.
Randolph didn't care about his own life. All he could think about was his lovely Petra and their little Rebecca. He couldn't accept that they were slaughtered while he was so close to rescuing them. He fought back the despair that was trying to overtake him and he held his wits. He knew he would make this cult pay for their crimes, even if it meant that he would die in the process. Without his family, he had no reason to live anyway.
As sunset approached, Randolph's cell was engulphed with strange fumes. He could feel his mind slipping away as the fumes filled the cell. Randolph practiced his Tibetan Meditation in the hope that he could resist the drug induced stupor that his assailants wished upon him. A few minutes later, they came for him. They released him from his cell and dragged him to the very same altar that held his wife and child on the previous day. They secured him to the altar, and joined their colleagues in their ritual.
The Baron, in his robes and mask, approached as the ritual commenced. He chanted the evil, forgotten words as he raised the black opal knife into the air. As he slashed forward with the knife, Randloph reached out and, using the last of his strength, broke the chains that bound him to the altar. He struggled with the Baron, but unfortunately, Randolph was weak from the drug induced fumes (while it didn't knock him out completely, it did slow him down) and the Baron was able to get a killing strike in with the knife.
Randolph looked at his chest and ignored the dagger that stuck through his heart. He called on the last reserves of his strength and picked up the Baron and threw him into the nearby bonfire. He then fell to his knees and died. But that wasn't the end of Randolph Snow. He drifted in an abyss (for what seems like an eternity), but he found himself standing over his dead body at the altar. He had taken on a ghostly presence which sent the primitive savages into terror as they watched him materialize. His consciousness was burning for the desire for revenge.
Randolph Snow, now known as the Phantom Avenger, never did find the bodies of his lost family in the fortress. That didn't stop him from completely destroying the fortress and its habitants. He had lost all the passion that he knew while he was alive, he now "lives" on with the need to avenge the injustices and evil that infests this world. He did just that during World War II, he joined the American super-hero team known as the Mystery Brigade and they battled the Nazis' own super-team on many occassions. After the war, he would appear here and there as he sought to correct some wrong or injustice. He still appears today as a spirit of vengeance against those who would prey on the weak or helpless.
