Origin and Background: (African-Canadian) Ayesha Cliffe was once a normal Toronto Zoo employee until her encounter with a strange Totem Spirit while working late at the zoo. The spirit appeared in a twister of dust and leaves. It stood two stories tall and had a set of antlers as wide. Its nostrils exhaled clouds of green smoke as the spirit studied the frightened Ayesha. It was as if the totem spirit could see right through her with its piercing red eyes. The spirit commanded that she become its avatar in this world.
The following morning, Ayesha found herself lying on the top of one of the zoo's many hills. Her clothes were torn into rags but she felt great. She quickly made it to her office and changed her clothes. Ayesha decided that the preceeding night was nothing but a nightmare. She had work to do and she quickly forgot about it. The following nights she dreamed of running with the pack... of protecting the weaker members of the herd from predators. She fought valiantly as she prevented scavengers and carnivores from hurting her 'family'. It was also during these nights that her physical transformation became apparent.
Ayesha's life was never again the same when she grew her horns and her stripes. She now looked like the wild beasts that she used to care for. She thought her life was over. No one would be interested in a "freak" like her. Ayesha knew she had a sacred duty to protect the less fortunate and she held to that faith when she first arrived at work (horns and all). She was an instant hit. The Zoo's "Powers-That-Be" wanted Ayesha to become their media spokesperson.
Ayesha took the 'stage name' of Impala and became a successful media celebrity (first as a tv spokeswoman for the Toronto Zoo, and then as a model) as she launched her own career. She used her media position to help many animal-friendly charities. If she wasn't getting her hands dirty fighting crime on the streets, she was sponsoring charity balls in the name of endangered animals.
Then Victor Ukendu, a visiting African Prince, arrived in Impala's life. He attended her high-priced charities and galas and became msytified by her unique beauty. Prince Ukendu asked Impala to marry him when he first met her. She laughed at the notion, but was taken back by his elegance and charm. He asked if she wouldn't marry him, then she should at least be his guest the next night. She accepted and was seen all around town at his shoulder. In the following weeks, rumours of a romance were whispered by the media. Charities, dinners, nightclubs -- they wined and dined themselves all over the city. Then one night it came to an end as the visiting "prince" was unmasked as being the mastermind behind the smuggling and illegal hunting racket of endangered animals. Impala was instrumental in shutting down Prince Ukendu's multi-million dollar operation.
Prince Ukendu took out Impala's right eye with a ceremonial dagger while he struggled to free himself from her grasp. The physical pain didn't bother her. What Impala knew hurt her more. She couldn't forgive him for how he had used her to gain access to protected animal sanctuaries. All she could see was red before her eyes as she lashed out against the man who lied and used her. She was ready to cut his throat when the RCMP arrived. They insisted that she release Prince Ukendu and they would take it from there. Impala wanted to pierce his black heart, but did what the police asked.
To Impala's horror, Prince Ukendu was released the next day. He used his diplomatic immunity to protect himself and asked for his right to leave Canada for his homeland. Impala knew that his operation has been dismantled, but it angered her that the mastermind behind the whole thing was about to get away scott free. She knew she had to do something about it.
Prince Ukendu thought he had it made. He stepped into his private plane's cabin and took his seat. Ukendu smiled as he watched the ground grow farther and farther away as the plane took off. It was good to be the Prince, thought Ukendu. His smile disappeared as he heard a familiar voice ask him if he wanted a drink. He turned around slowly to find himself looking straight into the snarling face of Impala. With a quick blur of her hand, Ukendu felt a stab of pain at his right eye as the world went black.
Impala tumbled out of the plane to safety as it took its wounded passenger home. She stared at her bloodied claw and could only think of one simple phrase..."an eye for an eye." Impala would eventually put this bit of "ugliness" behind her and she left the world of charity balls and concentrated more on her hands-on (some would say claws-on) approach. She even worked with "the Dominion of Canada" enough times to be considered a honourary member (she has always refused official membership).
