This alternate skill system was heavily influenced by Chaosium's fantastic Call of Cthulhu RPG. Characters gain Int x20 skill points and a hobby 'bonus' of Int x1d10. These skill points are then allocated as percentiles on any skill selected by the player. Add the appropriate characteristic score to the skill percentage to gain the final result. For example, the player creating the hero, Tiger-Man, decides to take the Swim skill. He places 40 points into it and the GM informs him that Swim is an Agl based skill. So Tiger-Man adds his Agility of 42 to get the final Swim skill of 82%.
Scores may be increased past 100%, but a roll of 99 - 100 is always a failure. Skills can further be modified for task difficulty (see below). Skill Training is a legitimate option for the types of training (gains an additional hobby bonus (Int x1d10) to spend on old and new skills alike) that a player may choose.
Simple | +20% |
Average | None |
Challenging | -10% |
Difficult | -20% |
Strenuous | -40% |
Extreme | -80% |
